Theater Clouds

Have I got some whimsical, wonderful and downright gorgeous artwork for the nursery today? Yes, yes I have…

Ontario-based Elly MacKay creates her incredible images by inking yupo paper and cutting it into layers which she then sets up in a miniature theater. A little like this…

But then when she plays around with the lights and filters to create atmosphere and photographs the scenes the result is this…

I love them! The layering gives them a definite 3D quality and the blur makes them so magical.

Once again I’ve shown you something I want for myself that is perfect for children too! But I guess that’s just what I’m drawn to. Things bought for baby don’t have to be something that will only work for their first few years, they can be something your little one will love for a long time. Perhaps even until they decide to put it in their own child’s nursery. And there’s something lovely about that :)

I want an SUV Monster

As someone who just put up my Miffy calendar in my new room this week, the next artist I’m about to show you is right up my street! Simple, bold, bright and cute. When it comes to illustration if it has those features I’m sold. And grinning at the same time :D Anyway I shouldn’t really be talking about me, I’m 28! But the style of illustration I love is just as equally suited to little ones and I’m sure would make them smile just as much as me!

On to the illustrator… Hsinping Pan grew up in Taiwan and has now moved to California, all the while she drew delights such as these…

Insanely cute right?! I want the SUV Monster print!

Hsinping also created some gorgeous cards to help with the relief work in Japan, they’re only $4 (roughly £2.50) and 100% of the sale will go to those that were affected by the devastating earthquake:

Lovely :)

How to Catch a Star

A wise man (or probably woman) once said “TV. If kids are entertained by two letters, imagine the fun they’ll have with twenty-six. Open your child’s imagination. Open a book.” So true. Books have an impact like no other form of entertainment, for children and adults alike. But, a BEautiful book on the other hand, well that’s a whole other kettle of fish! Today I want to show you some of my (and Debs’) favourite beautiful kids’ books, by an exceptional author and illustrator, Oliver Jeffers. Many of you may already be familiar with Oliver Jeffers’ books, but I make no apologies for this post, as I don’t believe you can ever see too much of this kind of gorgeousness!

My first introduction to Oliver Jeffers was when I came across ‘How to Catch a Star’ in a book shop whilst shopping for Alice’s Christmas presents 4 years ago, and it remains my favourite to this day. The blurb – Once there was a boy and the boy loved stars very much. One day he decided he would catch one of his own, but first, he’d need a plan.

It is a beautifully touching story of a boy and his innocence, and the pictures, as with all Oliver Jeffers books, are simply stunning.

Oliver Jeffers has a number of other charming stories in his collection, such as The Incredible Book-Eating Boy , Lost and Found (now also a short film) and The Heart and the Bottle. These are also, of course, bursting with their own, delightful illustrations.

I learned something new today (thank you Belle Bébés!) about these fabulous images – you can own copies of the prints themselves to adorn your babies’ walls! Head over to Oliver Jeffers’ website for more information, or maybe just to enjoy the pretty pictures for a while!
