The interview

Introduction:
Hi there, I’m Alanna from Alanna Nicole Photography, and I love to take photos!

Location:
Abbotsford, BC near Vancouver

When and how did you fall in love with photography?
I fell in love with photography in March 2010. I had a few photographer friends whose blogs I followed, and one day my friend posted a blog about meeting Jasmine Star who is a famous wedding photographer based in California. I clicked on the link to Jasmine’s blog and fell in love with her images. I spent days pouring over her blog, reading it from start to finish. I loved the way she captured emotion, and her story of how she started in the industry was so inspiring. I then knew that I wanted to peruse photography. I’ve always loved doing creative things.

Have you had any formal training?
I took two classes out of Vancouver Photo Workshops, which were fantastic. I learned the ins and outs of my DSLR camera and found that it gave me that much more confidence to start up my own business. I’ve also had many opportunities to second shoot and assist alongside other photographers which really helped as well.

How would you describe your photography style?
Clean, fresh, fun, creative. I like to have fun during my sessions. I laugh a lot. I love capturing those real life moments.

What inspires your work?
Real life. Documenting the beauty that I see in people, nature and my surroundings.

When did you first start out in portraiture photography?
September 2010

Where are you based and how far would you travel for a shoot?
I’m based in Abbotsford, BC which is an hour east of Vancouver. I travel anywhere in the Lower Mainland including Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and I would go to the Interior BC as well, in the Kelowna area.

How many portrait sessions do you shoot per year?
Right now I’m averaging around 4 sessions per month, as I still have another part time job on top of it. I haven’t had a full year in my business yet, but am working on increasing those numbers, and someday hope to make my photography business full time :)

Could you please share some details of a shoot you particularly enjoyed capturing?
I loved doing my cousin’s maternity session just a few months ago. She and her husband were so relaxed and so much fun, and it was just a really great opportunity to take their photographs and spend that extra time with them. They totally trusted me with what I had envisioned for their shoot. We also had the dreamiest, prettiest evening light outside! That’s my favourite, shooting in the glow of the evening sun. It was a blast!

What would be your idea of a dream portraiture shoot?
All of my clients so far have been a dream to photograph! As long as you are having fun, and you allow me to really capture who you truly are, then I’m in my dream portraiture shoot.

What is your favourite age to photograph and why?
I love photographing children because they have so much personality and they are always a lot of fun. I always get a work out chasing them around! I also really love photographing women and showcasing their beauty through maternity sessions, anytime sessions, and boudoir sessions.

What difficulties, if any, have you come across with portrait photography and how do you cope with them?
I haven’t had too many difficulties yet!

What advice would you give to parents that want you to photograph their little ones?
First of all, I’m happy that you are getting photographs of your kids! I think it’s so important to keep documenting life, no matter what stage you are in, and to do it often. Kids grow up so fast, and photographs are the best way to capture a moment in time. When thinking of a location for the session with your kids, think of a place that has special meaning to you and your family. It’s always the best when my clients choose a location that they can connect and relate to. The kids end up being more comfortable, and their personalities shine through.

What camera(s) do you use for your portraiture work?
A Canon 5d

And your favourite lenses?
My favourite lenses are the 50mm 1.4 and the 35mm 1.4.

Do you use any lighting equipment?
I use natural light only :)

What advice would you give to wannabe portrait photographers?
Get out there and practice, practice, practice! Don’t be afraid to jump right in. Also, be true to who you are as an individual. Don’t get too discouraged by what every other photographer out there is doing. Everyone is different and that’s the awesome part. There is a photographer for everyone. People will relate differently to different photographers. Just remember to be the amazing person that YOU are, and people will relate to you and appreciate your honesty and character.

What has been your proudest moment as a photographer?
I can’t quite think of one specific moment, but recently hearing a lot from other people how much they connect and relate to me through my blog. I love writing along with taking photographs, and I feel that my blog says exactly who I am as a person. It’s the real me. It’s really neat to hear that people really like my stuff and that they can also relate to what I write about. It’s pretty awesome!

Out of all the photographs you have ever taken, which is your favourite and why?
I absolutely love newborns. This photo is one of my favourites because it captures the peacefulness and softness of this beautiful baby. I just love how cute and cuddly she looks! She is a sleeping beauty.

If you could capture anybody or anything on camera what would it be?
I would love to just document my own life with my husband more often. More photojournalistic and real life moments.

Just so we can find out a bit more about the person behind the lens, could you tell me 5 things you like that are completely unrelated to photography?

  • I’m addicted to cupcakes!
  • I love watching Disney movies.
  • I love my cat.
  • I’m married to a pretty amazing guy.
  • Hawaii is my favourite vacation spot – the island of Maui to be exact :)

And 5 things you dislike?

  • Bad drivers.
  • The rain.
  • When my house gets really messy.
  • Not getting enough sleep.
  • TV commercials.

What are your aspirations for the future, in photography or otherwise?
To continue growing my business and doing what I love to do, photographing people! I hope to branch a little more into wedding photography as well. My goal is to also considerably step down my hours in my other job and do photography full time. I also hope to start a family soon!
