The interview

Introduction:
Hi I am Rosanna of Rosanna Hancock Photography. I specialise in creative portrait and wedding photography. I love to capture life’s precious moments whether it’s a bump, the first few days of your baby’s life, capturing your child’s first few steps or capturing your magical wedding day. I feel very honoured to be able to capture these precious moments in people’s lives.

Location:
Wokingham, Berkshire.

When and how did you fall in love with photography?
When I was 13 years old I used to love taking pictures with my little compact Kodak camera and enjoyed photographing landscapes and flowers. Then when I was 15 years old I decided to study GCSE Photography from then on I was in love with photography and knew that I wanted to be a photographer.

Have you had any formal training?
I studied GCSE photography at school and then completed a National Diploma in Photography and then completed a BSc Degree in Photography at the University of Surrey.

How would you describe your photography style?
I would describe my style as stylish and whimsical with a modern vintage twist. I have an editorial approach to creating natural informal portraits that focuses on the person’s unique personality.

What inspires your work?
I take a lot of my inspiration from magazines, music videos, blogs and Pinterest as I am always striving to improve my style. This also helps keep my work fresh and current.

When did you first start out in portraiture photography?
I started portrait photography after I left University in 2008 and worked as a freelance photographer at numerous studios and also worked as a second photographer at weddings at the weekends. I then built my own studio at the end of 2008 and then started working from my home studio in 2009.

Where in the UK are you based and how far would you travel for a shoot?
I am based in the south of England in Wokingham, Berkshire. I am flexible to travel anywhere within the UK. I am also happy to travel around the UK for weddings and will also travel abroad for destination weddings.

How many portrait sessions do you shoot per year?
I currently shoot approximately 25 portraits a year which include newborns, bumps, children and families as well as a few boudoir and makeover sessions.

Could you please share some details of a shoot you particularly enjoyed capturing?
I enjoy all of my portrait shoots as I specialise in custom photography so each shoot is tailored to my clients needs and makes their session more personal to them.

However, one session that stands out to me was when I first launched my Little Stars package last year at a local baby show. I was approached by a young beautiful first time mum who was very excited about expecting her first baby and wanted to capture a wonderful record of her pregnancy, newborn baby and when the baby was first sitting at 6 months. They were a lovely couple and enjoyed being creative with each shoot and it was an honour to capture these wonderful moments of their baby from the beginning to seeing the baby develop over the 6 months. It was so special as I felt that over the 7-8 months I got to really know the couple very well and captured some wonderful photos that will be treasured for many years to come. This is what makes my job feel very rewarding.

What would be your idea of a dream portraiture shoot?
I love working out on location as I find lots of inspiration for a lifestyle session from photographing in a cornfield, lavender fields, amongst poppies, in the woods the possibilities are endless. However my dream would be to photograph abroad on a beautiful beach on a paradise island at the golden hour capturing some dreamy photos!

What is your favourite age to photograph and why?
I love photographing tiny newborns as it’s so beautiful to be able to capture those first few days of a newborns life. I love their tiny hands and feet and having a few cuddles too!

Rosanna-Hancock-PhotographyRosanna-Hancock-Photography

What difficulties, if any, have you come across with portrait photography and how do you cope with them?
I think photographing toddlers are the most difficult as they have a lot of energy and you have to be quick when they are in a good mood before they get too tired!

I always spend time with children before a shoot to get to know them before I get my camera out and always play a game with children when shooting to capture their natural expressions so they are never setup forced smiles. Playing games and playing with toys always distracts their attention from the camera and keeps them amused and having fun making the best photos.

What advice would you give to parents that want you to photograph their little ones?
To always be prepared! Make sure they have plenty of nappies and spare clothes. Make sure they have had a good feed beforehand and for toddlers to have a good nap beforehand so they won’t feel too tired. Also to bring snacks for toddlers so they won’t get hungry. To bring their favourite toys and anything personal to them that they would like to include in their photos.

What camera(s) do you use for your portraiture work?
Canon 5D Mark II digital SLR.

And your favourite lenses?
Prime lenses. I love using my 70-200mm f2.8 lens as this is a beautiful lens. I use this lens for location portrait shoots and it’s also great for using at weddings.

Do you use any lighting equipment?
I use my Bowens lights in the studio for my newborn photography but I also like to use natural light in the studio, and on location, as this ties in with my style of photography.

Rosanna-Hancock-PhotographyRosanna-Hancock-PhotographyRosanna-Hancock-Photography

What advice would you give to wannabe portrait photographers?
To always keep practicing, you can never stop learning as it’s very important to learn about how to use light to its best advantage. You also need to work on developing your own unique style.

What has been your proudest moment as a photographer?
I entered a photo into the AOP Open (Association of Photographers) competition in London and I was shortlisted as a runner up. My photo was exhibited at the AOP Gallery in London and was also printed in the AOP magazine in 2008. This was a wonderful moment for me as I had just graduated from University with a First Class Honours degree and this was a great achievement for the end of my year at University.

Out of all the photographs you have ever taken, which is your favourite and why?
I think it would have to be a photo I took of a cute little girl this spring amongst the bluebells. To me it captures the innocence of childhood as she was having great fun in her own little world finding fairies in the bluebells.

Rosanna-Hancock-Photography

If you could capture anybody or anything on camera what would it be?
I have always dreamt of photographing famous musicians and shooting their album cover artwork. Album covers are always pushing the boundaries of contemporary portraiture.

Just so we can find out a bit more about the person behind the lens, could you tell me 5 things you like that are completely unrelated to photography?

  • Travelling
  • Netball
  • Swimming
  • Music
  • Chocolate :)

And 5 things you dislike?

  • Rain
  • Gherkins
  • Spiders
  • Arrogant people
  • Winter

Rosanna-Hancock-PhotographyRosanna-Hancock-Photography

What are your aspirations for the future, in photography or otherwise?
To continue growing my business and for my partner to work full-time with me, to build a large lifestyle studio in the beautiful countryside. I would also like to travel the world and document my journey.

Belle Bébés asks… Catarina Zimbarra

Whether you are a parent wanting beautiful pictures of your children, an amateur photographer looking to learn more about portrait photography or somebody who just likes to read an interesting interview accompanied by pretty pictures, these posts are for you…

The interview

Introduction:
I am Catarina Zimbarra and since 2004 I’ve been documenting real life and real people. I’m a mother of a little girl, happy and so blessed to capture true moments of love.

Location:
Lisbon, Portugal

When and how did you fall in love with photography?
When I was a kid, I remember my Dad always with a camera in his hand, trying to capture true and unique family moments. Soon I realized I was as crazy about photography as he was, and then my Dad taught me everything I needed to know to start composing, shooting and enjoying life.

Have you had any formal training?
Yes. I had photography classes during my high school (it was an Art School) and then at University when I took my degree in Graphic Design. Over several years I learned with the best teachers/photographers, learning all the basic principals, dark room revelations and history. And I still want to learn more!

How would you describe your photography style?
I don’t want to say unique, but I need to say true. True to myself, capturing those special and inspiring moments of happiness that are so spontaneous in life. My style is definitely contemporary, fun and real.

What inspires your work?
Mostly love. I live among people in love. In love with their families, kids, wives, brothers etc and that unique connection is where I find inspiration to capture true moments. It’s so funny when in a photo session I realize I’m doing amazing photos due to my state of mind. And I’m happy because they’re happy. So, definitely, my clients help me to give them the best of me.

When did you first start out in portraiture photography?
Back in 2004, I started my wedding photography business and in 2007 I started my project with babies and families. I thought it would be amazing to be part of so many wonderful families and join them through life.

Where are you based and how far would you travel for a shoot?
I’m based in Lisbon, Portugal but I travel as far as a client asks me. I love to travel.

How many portrait sessions do you shoot per year?
Around 60 portrait sessions, including maternity, babies and kids.

Could you please share some details of a shoot you particularly enjoyed capturing?
It’s always nice to shoot families and babies, tiny ones. But I remember one particular shoot at the beach I love. Loved because it was a kid I’ve been photographing since his first year, because I just love his mother and their bond. And most of all because he’s really demanding and a challenge for me in every photo shoot. He’s so much energy and never stops for a second definitely he challenges my skills, and pushes me to the limit. And seeing the result of such difficult time with him, running, jumping around, it’s the most rewarding thing. Beautiful images captured with so much love and happiness. Those are truly moments of inspiration.

What would be your idea of a dream portraiture shoot?
I’ve never thought of that before, but I could say it would be fun to do a big family photo shoot inside Versailles. I just love that dramatic feeling. ;)

What is your favourite age to photograph and why?
Babies are so cute, but I’ll say 4 years old. When they could interact and talk with you and we both could enjoy fun moments together.

What advice would you give to parents that want you to photograph their little ones?
Let kids be themselves. Don’t ask them for smiles and formal poses. Don’t worry about perfect moments because the most perfect are the true ones that you want to keep forever.

What camera(s) do you use for your portraiture work?
I use a Canon 5D Mark II.

And your favourite lenses?
50mm f.14, 16-35mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.8.

Do you use any lighting equipment?
No, I only use natural light.

What advice would you give to wannabe portrait photographers?
I think you should be true to you, to your heart and style. Don’t try to be someone you’re not because the most amazing photos and work comes out of your heart and inspiration. Of course you could be inspired by others but you really need to find your own style and talent.

What has been your proudest moment as a photographer?
I could say winning awards or big professional compliments… but I think I would say “where I’m today”. It’s not a “proudest moment” but it’s more like I’m proud of myself, my journey all these years and how much I’ve grown as a photographer and a person. And what makes me proud is knowing that I always have been true, studying hard trying to be better, giving the best for my clients. They are my inspiration and what I offer them makes be proud of myself

Out of all the photographs you have ever taken (professionally or otherwise), which is your favourite and why?
Oh, that’s the hardest question of all. I couldn’t pic just one but I could chose one from that photo shoot at the beach, (the hard one). Because of the challenge, I was running after him all the time, and seeing the result and the happiness of my client seeing his child like that…it’s priceless.

If you could capture anybody or anything on camera what would it be?
It would be amazing capture the first days of my grandchild. But for now, I stay with such precious moments of my One-Year-old girl :)

Just so we can find out a bit more about the person behind the lens, could you tell me 5 things you like that are completely unrelated to photography?

Besides my family of course, I love:
Coffee with Pão de ló (A typical Portuguese cake made with lots of eggs)
Travel (long ones)
Sew and make craft things just for fun
All day at the beach
Yoga

And 5 things you dislike?
Rainy days when I have a photo shoot
Bulling
Changing smelly diapers
People yelling
Running

What are your aspirations for the future, in photography or otherwise?
I know it’s a cliché saying I just want to be happy. Because I’m happy and I have a truly amazing life, but you always wants more. For me, it’s all about being recognized as a good photographer as also a good person. My aspirations are about growing as a photographer, doing what I love most in my country and abroad. It would be amazing if I could travel the world photographing happy families.

Belle Bébés asks… Sophie Hewitt

Whether you are a parent wanting beautiful pictures of your children, an amateur photographer looking to learn more about portrait photography or somebody who just likes to read an interesting interview accompanied by pretty pictures, these posts are for you…

The interview

Introduction:
My name is Sophie Hewitt and I adore my job! Every day I have the privilege of spending time with tiny newborn babies, beautiful children, excited expectant mums and fun families, capturing treasured moments in their lives, forever. From photographing newborns in the comfort of their own homes to capturing the fun had by families out on a welly walk, I specialise in photographing real family moments.

Location:
Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.

When and how did you fall in love with photography?
My dad gave me one of his old cameras when I was around 14 years old. It had no instruction manual and I had no idea how to use it, so I experimented, taking photos of my friends. I was bitten by the bug and, through much trial and error, I progressively grew to understand the different settings on the camera and the basic principles of photography. From that moment on I have been hooked.

Have you had any formal training?
Yes, I studied photography at college when I first left school. Back then it was all about mastering the art of the dark room and photographing on film – skills that seem light years away from today’s photography, but which were a brilliant grounding in the art. I went on to study for three years at London College of Fashion where I would pour over the work of many of the great photographers of our time. Whilst holding down a career in PR and marketing I completed an Open University photography course in 2008, which brought my editing and workflow skills up to date. I attend training seminars at least a couple of times each year to hear new ideas and pick up new skills. Whilst having the eye for a picture is a natural ability, the technology surrounding photography is forever evolving and it’s important to stay on top of it.

How would you describe your photography style?
Timeless, natural and truthful. Timeless, because I shoot exclusively in black and white, capturing images that I believe will look as relevant in twenty years time as they do today. Natural, because I stand back and observe with my camera, which usually means children forget I’m there. Truthful, because by spending an entire morning with my clients in their own surroundings I can capture portrait shots that portray real personalities and which show real family life.

What inspires your work?
I love family photos from decades gone by, because they are so much more natural and truthful than today’s over airbrushed, over stylized portraits. When my clients’ children reach their adult years I want them to be able to recognise themselves in my photography and to remember the real family scene that’s captured in the frame. I like to think of my portraits as being an aide memoire to special childhood moments and in that respect the inspiration also comes directly from the children and families I photograph.

When did you first start out in portraiture photography?
Ever since I picked up my first camera I wanted to photograph people. When I first studied photography we would be given weekly assignments to shoot landscapes, architecture, still life and so on. Week upon week I would figure out ways to include people in my shots – and week upon week I would be berated by my tutor! To me a photograph just isn’t a photograph unless it includes the human form.

Where in the UK are you based and how far would you travel for a shoot?
I’m based in Stratford-Upon-Avon, but I travel to my clients to do family and children’s portrait shoots in locations throughout Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and the West Midlands. I also travel further afield by arrangement.

How many portrait sessions do you shoot per year?
At the moment I’m shooting on average one to two on location portrait sessions per week. There are peaks and troughs throughout the year, with summer and the run up to Christmas being my busiest periods.

Could you please share some details of a shoot you particularly enjoyed capturing?
I did a shoot late last summer with two little sisters at an amazing stately home in Warwickshire. The light that morning was magical so we started the shoot in a wooded area where the sun was dappling beautifully against the leaves. The girls turned up adorned in fairy wings and wands, and as they twirled their way through the woods, tiny pieces of dust got thrown into the air, catching the light from the sun’s rays. “Flower fairies!!!” the sisters squealed!! We spent the entire morning hunting for fairies in the flower beds and secret gardens of the stately home, which took me right back to being a five-year-old with my own lovely sister. It was a truly magical shoot that I shall remember for a long, long time.

What would be your idea of a dream portraiture shoot?
I often hanker after doing an on location children’s portrait session on a beach. I grew up in Kent and spent much of my childhood at the beach, so now I live in the Midlands I feel very landlocked! An early summer morning beach shoot with young children paddling and running in and out of the waves would be simply magical.

What is your favourite age to photograph and why?
Oh, that’s impossible to answer! Every age has its own unique qualities – newborns are incredible to photograph, toddlers are immense fun and older children are both entertaining and intriguing. I really can’t single out one particular age or stage.

What difficulties, if any, have you come across with portrait photography and how do you cope with them?
There aren’t really any difficulties, just sometimes challenges…shy children, super-excited children…but as a family photographer that is all par for the course and it’s what makes the job so varied. I have plenty of fairy / elf / boy band / super-hero stories up my sleeves to get the children engaged and once they are focussed I then stand back, camera at the ready, and let them be the directors of the day.

What advice would you give to parents that want you to photograph their little ones?
Get your children involved in something they love doing – tree climbing, a teddy bears’ tea party, painting, bouncing on the bed – anything so that they forget you’re there with a camera. The shots you’ll get will say so much more about who your kids really are than if you ask them to stand still and smile for the camera.

What camera(s) do you use for your portraiture work?
The Canon 5D MK II – a great piece of kit.

And your favourite lenses?
The 50mm prime 1.2 is my favourite, but I also love using the 70-200mm 2.8 when I’m shooting outdoors.

Do you use any lighting equipment?
No, I’m a natural light photographer so I simply use the sun and clouds and all the beautiful combinations of light that they produce. I carry reflectors with me and wear light coloured clothing, but that’s about the extent of my lighting equipment!

What advice would you give to wannabe portrait photographers?
Take a photo (or several) every single day. Analyse your images, work on them, improve the next time you shoot and from there develop your own style. Not only will this give you the practice you need, but it will also result in a visual record that will show you just how much you and your skills have progressed over time, and that’s always rewarding and motivating to see.

What has been your proudest moment as a photographer?
Every time I do a viewing and a parent sheds a tear (or ten!), I get a huge sense of pride and achievement. The first time it happened I burst into tears myself! Also, I recently met a well known photographer whose work I have admired greatly for many years. When she saw my image of the boy running by the wall she said she wished it was one of hers. I came away from that meeting feeling immensely proud and motivated.

Out of all the photographs you have ever taken (professionally or otherwise), which is your favourite and why?
The portrait shot of the little boy running by the wall. It’s the photograph that everyone comments about and I’m often asked by clients to recreate that shot for them. It’s made me somewhat of a wall spotter – if I spot a fab wall when I’m out and about I’ll make a note of it in case I get an on-location portrait shoot booking in the vicinity!

If you could capture anybody or anything on camera what would it be?
Me with my boys! No, I’m not vain, it’s just that I have a house full of lovely pictures of my two sons and my husband, but I don’t feature in any of them because I’m always behind the camera! I would love to be able to photograph myself with the boys – believe me I’ve tried, but it’s just not the same!

Just so we can find out a bit more about the person behind the lens, could you tell me 5 things you like that are completely unrelated to photography?

• Kissing my boys’ warm faces when they wake first thing in the morning
• Family picnics in the Cotswolds
• Holidaying in South of France
• An 8pm glass of vino when my sons are in bed - the golden hour!
• The cold side of the pillow in the middle of the night

And 5 things you dislike?
• Spiders
• Doing the school run in the rain
• The never ending quest to find my sons’/husband’s many odd socks!
• Junk mail
• Living so far away from my parents (they’re in Cyprus) and my sister (she’s in Australia)

What are your aspirations for the future, in photography or otherwise?
I always want to continue to develop and grow as a photographer (I don’t think you ever stop), and to become known for my signature style. I’m planning to put in for some awards this year too – fingers, legs and toes crossed!
