Nursery inspiration : Calvin & Hobbes

As a teenager I loved Calvin & Hobbes. I used to read the books compiling numerous awesome comic strips of the cheeky six-year-old and his pet tiger Hobbes (who appeared stuffed to everybody else, but was very much a real life tiger to Calvin).

I must dig out the books and rediscover those comics really, and if you haven’t ever read any I suggest you give them a go :)

Anyway, the reason I talk of them is because I spotted this delightful mural, over on My Modern Met, featuring Calvin & Hobbes that would be lovely for a little one’s bedroom…

The comics aren’t actually aimed at children but this is the sort of nursery that both Calvin & Hobbes-loving parents and children can get a kick out of… as to children, a young boy having a pet tiger is still a cool concept!

A comic creation

And now, before I sign off, I’ll leave you with a few examples of Bill Watterson’s brilliant creation…

Paint by numbers

Remember paint by numbers? The gift that could turn the artistically challenged into Van Gogh? Well, it wasn’t quite that effective but it did give those who weren’t that handy with a paintbrush the opportunity to complete a piece of artwork, stand back and proudly announce “I did that”. Well you can apply that principle to murals too! Perhaps you want to paint a lovely wall for the little one but think you’re useless at art? Fear not! Just make it a giant paint by numbers like the Cabin Collective do :) Just check out some of their amazing work…

And I don’t think it would be too tricky to do yourself. If you scanned a blank paint by number piece, printed it onto acetate and projected it onto the wall all you’d then have to do is trace and fill in the shapes with paint. True it’s not quite as quick as rolling one coat of one colour on the walls but you will be able to stand back and proudly announce “I did that”. And that’s a good feeling :)

P.S. Here’s a tutorial of another method too :)

A Beatrix Potter painting

When Belle Bébés reader Kate got in touch to ask if I’d like to feature her baby’s room the answer was a definite yes. I’m a huge fan of contemporary design but I also have a rather large soft spot for the classics too. And Beatrix Potter is definitely a classic contender for children’s design. Says Kate…

“As we didn’t want to find out the sex of our baby, my husband and I decided a Beatrix Potter themed nursery would be fitting for either a boy or girl. I set about looking for wallpaper/borders but to no avail so I decided to try my hand at creating a mural and absolutely loved the process. Our beautiful baby boy; Henry Thomas, arrived on 26-4-11 and hopefully he will love it too!”

A painting in progress

Kate sent me images of the work in progress. You can see where she’s pinned the images to the wall to decide on their locations. A great way to decide where to put characters as you can easily move them until you’re happy…

A magical mural

And here’s the finished room. Wow!

And Kate’s talent doesn’t stop at incredible painting skills. Just look what she created with an average paper lantern, basket, glue gun and a little imagination!

What a wonderful room! I’m positive Henry will be very impressed by what his mummy achieved; this is one magnificent mural!

P.S. Do you have a room you think would suit our Belle Bébés blog? If so make sure you get in touch. :)
