Mayamiko Trust

I featured a gorgeous shoot captured by Antonina Mamzenko at the start of December. When she sent over the images for me to feature she also let me know about a company called the Mayamiko Trust that she was working with. The Mayamiko Trust is a UK registered charity that helps underprivileged women in Malawi get themselves out of poverty by training them in sewing and tailoring.

Mayamiko’s vision is to supply UK and worldwide wholesalers and retailers with high-quality, ethically produced African-made fashion and homeware. They have created an ethical production unit in Malawi where they train the women whilst also providing them with meals, bicycles and childcare. Many of the trainees are, sadly, victims or care for orphans of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Mayamiko’s adorable first range of childrenswear was designed in collaboration with Soko Kenya, the eco and ethical production unit founded by fashion label Lalesso.

All garments were ethically produced on the shores of Lake Malawi by Mayamiko trainees with colourful cotton prints from the local market called ‘zitenje’. Buttons and embellishments were made by local artisans with reclaimed wood and other recycled materials.

The very playful, one of a kind range of clothing caters for boys and girls in the age range 3 months to 5 years, and includes cutsie panties and booties, pretty little dresses and matching sets, as well as fun little shirts for boys, which are easy to wear and perfect for summer.

I am a huge admirer of this charity. If you give money to those suffering from poverty it can only last so long and only do so much. Providing them with skills gives them the opportunity to continually make money for themselves which will not only help them but their children and the community too.

Also, the clothes are adorable! If you’d like to support Mayamiko and buy these beautiful African outfits for your children please visit the Facebook shop and browse the categories to see what’s in store. And please do pass on the word about the Mayamiko Trust. It’s amazing that simply by dressing your child beautifully you can be supporting less-privileged people elsewhere :)
